The new Salem-Namakkal-Karur broad gauge track is ready for use and it
is just a matter of time when passenger services will be operated on the
stretch, Salem Divisional Railway Manager Sujatha Jayaraj said on
Wednesday.
After inspecting Karur junction, she said that the
Commissioner for Rail Safety has certified track worthiness of the
stretch and plans are under way to primarily operate the proposed
Chennai Central-Palani Express, Nagercoil-Bengaluru Express and
Chennai-Madurai Duranto Express besides indicating the possibility of
introducing a Salem-Karur passenger service in the initial stages.
The DRM directed the officials to repair and renovate the damaged platform 1 roof at the junction.
She
also ordered the officials to carry out repair work to the dilapidated
compound walls in some sections of the railway area here.
Ms.
Sujatha also informed that Perugamani station would be renovated and
said that drinking water facilities, power availability and the like
would be developed at all stations en route.
The DRM
rewarded Mahadanapuram station with Rs. 5,000 for proper upkeep of
record; Rs. 1,000 for the Perugamani Station Master; and another Rs. 500
for his assistant for exemplary work.
Thavamani Pandi, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Salem, accompanied the official during the inspection.
